J. Smith. MRS. W. L. DEBERRY Mrs. Jesse Alien DeBerry, wife of Mr. W. I,.' DeBerry, died : at the home of her brother-in-law, j Mr. James E. DeBerry, in I Rosemary Sunday afternoon after j an illness of a few hours. Herj death came as a distinct shock to; her relatives and friends. Carter, A. C. Sledge, T. A. Chappell, P. H. Joyner, M. Josephson and G. VV. Cargile. Mrs. DeBerry was twenty seven years of age. She has been a resident of Rosemary for several years and was well known to a large circle of friends. HALIFAX COUNTY'S FIRST ENCAMPMENT FOR CLUB GIRLS An encampment has been plan ned for every club girl in Halifax County at Panacea Springs Aug. 9th to 13th. Tents have been provided for living quarters while at camp. A ration list has been sent each girl so that a propor ionate individual supply from homejnay be brought to last thru camp. The girls will be divided into squads to do the cook ing and other duties. The meals will be served cafeteria style. In the morning instruction periods consisting of basketry, millinery, dress design, and health lectures by efficient in structors will be held. The afternoons and evenings will be given over to swimming, games, singing and other wholesome re creation, lhe camp will be well chaperoned by the instructors and patrons of the girls who will attend. On Sat. Aug. 13th a big wind up picnic has been planned. The community people from every community in the county are in vited "and urged to join the camp on that day. All are requested to bring picnic lunch as it will not be practical to prepare lunch at the camp for every one. Every patron and friend will receive a hearty welcome at any time they may find convenient to visit the camp. We shall look for you. Ethel Leatherwood, Home Demonstration Agent Rosemary - Roanoke Rapids Takes Three The fastest baseball game of the season was played on the Rosemary Diamond Saturday af ternoon when the locals met the All Stars from Petersburg. No one reached first until the fifth inning when Cannon secured a hit. After seven and a half in nings the rain interferred and Umpire Collins Fitts called the game. Garthright did not allow a hit and not one of the visitors reached first base. Holmes put the ball over the fence and later "Shorty" Gray made the circuit. Monday afternoon Jackson met defeat by a score of twelve to six. ' Keeton pitched for the local team. Wednesday afternoon Weldon was beaten thirteen to ten. Doy're Cannon's homer with three on bases was the outstand ing feature of the game. The team meets the strong ag gregation known as "The Pola rines" tomorrow afternoon. This ,will be a battle royal as this club is one of the strongest rivals of the Roanoke Rapids-Rosemary club. In the first game with them the Polarines won in the ninth. Garthright will probaqly pitch for the home team ad Crump for the visitors. MILLS TO RESUME OPERATIONS AUG. 15 We are authorized by Mr. S. F. Patterson, Gen eral Manager of the Roa noke Mills Company and the Rosemary Manufac turing Company, to an nounce that the mills will resume full operation on August 15th. This an nouncement should put at rest iile rumors that have been current in re gard to the two mills in question, and unless something impossible to be foreseen now happens to prevent there will be a full resumption of acti vities at the close of the two weeks vacation v, hirh was given to the employees beginning with August 1st.. Peace, died at her home on Washington Street, Roanoke Rapids. Satur day afternoon at one thirty o' clock. She had been an invalid, for a numter of years and bore 1 her sufferings with a spirit of; fortitude. Mrs. Peace was one: of the old residents of the town, ; coming from Granville County: about fifteen years ago. She was ; a member of All Saints' (Episco-j pal) Church. The funeral ser-j vice was conducted in the homo; by her rector. Rev. Lewis NJ Taylor, Monday afternoon at two o'clock. F. held their regular meeting Monday night, Aug. 1st. This meeting was the first meeting of the attendance contest which has been inaugurated all over the state. An unusually large num ber were in attendance. Bro. C. W. Riggs made a very interesting lecture on the initia tory degree. The captains of the Red Hustlers and the True Blues are making a thorough can vass of the membership in order to beat Edgecombe Lodge No. oOin'Tarboro for the banner to be given by the Grand Lodge. This contest is on for three months and every member is earnestly requested to be present at every meeting of this lodge in order that "we may beat out Edgecombe Lodge. Thorne, of Butter wood, was elected Treasurer of the county by the Board of County Commissioners, last Mon day to succeed the late W. K. Har vey.
